Jesus has crossed the lake from Jewish Galilee into the Decapolis, a predominantly pagan, Greco-Roman region that represented a very different world from the Jewish communities where the disciples had grown up. For these Jewish boys from Galilee, this was the kind of place your parents warned you not to go—and now Jesus is telling them, “Get in the boat. We’re going to the other side.”

In Mark 4:35–41, Jesus and his disciples cross the Sea of Galilee when a violent storm threatens their boat. But Mark’s telling of the story contains important echoes of Psalm 107, where sailors caught in a raging sea cry out to YHVH, who stills the storm and brings them safely to their destination.
