Sea of Galilee (pt. 1 of 21)
Scholars have long recognized the importance of the land for understanding the life, ministry, and message of Jesus. In fact, the geographical and cultural setting of the Gospels has sometimes been described as the “Fifth Gospel”—the land itself providing another layer of context for understanding the biblical text.
In this introductory lesson, we explore the geography of the Sea of Galilee and the distinct regions surrounding its shores. Although these communities were separated by only a few miles, they could differ significantly in population, culture, religion, and politics.

Where Jesus travels, who lives there, and who is listening can dramatically affect how we understand a particular story. Crossing the Sea of Galilee was sometimes more than simply traveling from one location to another—it could mean crossing cultural, religious, and social boundaries.
Throughout this series, we will explore familiar stories from the ministry of Jesus while paying particular attention to their geographical, social, historical, and cultural settings. We will ask where each event takes place, who the intended audience is, and how the people involved respond to Jesus and his message.
Join us as we begin our journey around the Sea of Galilee and discover how understanding the land can bring the world of the Gospels to life.

Take your time while watching and listening to the video, and write down notes as they come to mind to support your learning.
Pause the video to read the associated scripture verses as we discuss them. Begin noticing the descriptors in the Gospels that help you identify the geographical location.
At some point in the next week or two, listen to the lesson again. It is like watching a movie the second or third time, and noticing things you did not notice during the initial viewing.
