Who Were the Zealots?
Understanding the Revolutionary World of Jesus
Sea of Galilee (pt. 13 of 21)
Who were the Zealots, and how did their revolutionary movement influence the world of Jesus and His disciples?
In this introductory lesson, we begin a short series exploring the Zealots, a Jewish revolutionary movement that resisted Roman rule in first-century Israel. We will also introduce Gamla, a city near the Sea of Galilee associated with the origins of the Zealot movement.
Lesson Handout:
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus encounters individuals whose expectations of the Messiah were shaped by revolutionary thinking. Even one of His disciples, Simon, was known as “the Zealot” (Luke 6:15; see also Mark 3:18).
Understanding the Zealots and their political and religious convictions provides important historical context for the actions of Jesus' disciples, the crowds who wanted to make Him king, and the growing tensions that ultimately led to the Jewish revolt against Rome.
