276 Souls Saved: The Hidden Meaning of Acts 27

Sea of Galilee (pt. 10 of 21)

Why does Luke tell us that exactly 276 people were aboard the ship carrying Paul to Rome? Is this simply a historical detail, or is there a deeper symbolic meaning?

In Acts 27:37, Luke records that 276 people were aboard the ship—and remarkably, every soul was saved from the shipwreck!

Lesson Handout:

But 276 is no ordinary number. It is a triangular number—the triangle of 23 (1 + 2 + 3 ... + 23 = 276). Even more intriguing, the 23rd letter of the Greek alphabet is Psi (Ψ), the first letter of the Greek word psychē, meaning "soul."

How many souls were saved? 276. A perfect number for the story Luke is telling!

There is another fascinating connection. A unique Hebrew phrase in Jeremiah 23:5-6 has a numerical value of 276 and speaks to God's promise of deliverance.

The phrase, "The LORD is our righteousness," occurs only twice in the Hebrew Bible, which makes it an important phrase in the mind of the Rabbis.

5 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and He will reign wisely as King and will administer justice and righteousness in the land.
6 In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is His name by which He will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.

But there is a second dimension to this story: Hope and the Anchor of the Soul.

Throughout Acts 27, Luke repeatedly mentions the ship's anchors. As the storm intensifies, he tells us that "all hope of our being saved was at last abandoned" (Acts 27:20). Yet Paul receives a divine promise that not a single life will be lost.

This imagery brings us to Hebrews 6:19, where hope is described as "an anchor of the soul." The hope of Israel was rooted in God's promises of salvation, including the promise in Jeremiah 23:5–6. Now, in Luke's account, that hope extends beyond Israel to the Gentiles aboard the ship. All 276 souls are delivered!

Could Luke be weaving together numbers, ancient promises, and the imagery of hope to communicate a deeper message about God's salvation extending to the nations?

In this lesson, we take a brief detour from our Sea of Galilee series to explore the fascinating connections between 276, the soul, the anchor of hope, and God's promise of salvation.
