Living Water: The True Meaning of God's Grace (John pt. 38)

Lesson Handout:

Most Christians understand grace as "unmerited favor." But the Hebrew Scriptures reveal a richer picture: God's favor can be merited through faithfulness and generously extended to others.

Just as Israel benefited from Moses finding favor with God (Exodus 33:17), those who attach themselves to Jesus, the perfectly righteous Messiah, become recipients of his favor.

"From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace." — John 1:16

The Bible beautifully illustrates grace through the imagery of living water. Unlike stagnant cistern water or well water that must be drawn through human effort, living water flows freely from a natural spring—a continuous, life-giving gift.

In John 4 and John 7, Jesus offers this living water as a picture of God's generosity, flowing into our lives, refreshing our inner being, and transforming us through the Spirit.

Grace is more than a theological concept about salvation. It is the overflowing goodness of God, generously shared through Jesus Christ.
