In Hebrew, the word for “city” is feminine—so Jerusalem is a “she.” This feminine imagery extends to the smaller villages that surround a central, fortified city.
In the ancient Near East, large cities like Jerusalem were walled and fortified, offering protection, food, and water during times of siege. But the smaller, unwalled villages—the daughters—were vulnerable. When enemies approached, these daughters were the first to suffer destruction, often bearing the brunt of the attack before the city itself.
