Beit She'an (Scythopolis)

1 min read

Beit She'an - also known as Scythopolis - was a prosperous Roman city during the time of Jesus' first-century ministry.

The city was part of the independent city-states known as the Decapolis. Scythopolis, the leading city of the Decapolis, was the only Decapolis city to exist west of the Jordan River.

Beit She'an is mentioned in the Old Testament - 1 Kings 4:12:

Baana son of Ahilud in Taanach, in Megiddo, and in all of Beth-shean next to Zarethan below Jezreel, from Beth-shean to Abel-meholah and on past Jokmeam; (1 Kings 4:12 - Berean Study Bible)

Variant spellings of Beit She'an are - Beth-shean or Bet Shen - depending on who is doing the transliteration.
