We’ll begin with an overview of John’s Gospel, but from a slightly different perspective. Throughout John, the stories themselves function almost like windows opening onto a higher spiritual reality. The text gives us the earthly story, but through that story John invites us to ascend toward something greater—the heavenly and mystical reality behind what we see on the page.

For example, John 1 introduces us to the Word (Logos) as the extension of God through whom all creation comes into being. In John 4, the woman at the well becomes much more than a conversation between Jesus and a Samaritan woman. The story opens a window onto Jesus’ cosmic role as Messiah and Bridegroom, coming to reclaim his bride.

From there, we will return to John 7:37–38 and Jesus as the Temple. The Jerusalem Temple represented the place where heaven and earth meet—the earthly dwelling place of God’s presence. Yet from…
